When Clemson vs. N.C.State kicks off at noon ET on Saturday, the Tigers’ defense must be prepared...
Key factors: Clemson vs. Florida in NCAA Baseball Super Regional 2024
It was easy to tell by the way Erik Bakich and Clemson’s players and fans celebrated their win over Coastal Carolina to capture the Clemson Regional that it had been a long time since the Tigers reached the NCAA Tournament’s Super Regional round. Fourteen years, to be exact.
That was also the last time the program advanced to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series. Is a return trip up next? The Tigers will find that out this weekend when they host the Florida Gators, who are led by a familiar face. Here are the key factors to watch this weekend:
Records: Clemson 44-14, Florida 32-28
Clemson at the plate: The Tigers continue to be led by Cam Cannarella and Blake Wright, while Jacob Hinderleider is coming off a performance that earned Regional MVP honors.
Clemson on the mound: The Tigers' pitching staff had a solid weekend, allowing 11 runs in three games behind two good starts from Aidan Knaak and Tristan Smith and a strong series from closer Austin Gordon, who pitched in all three games and retired all 10 batters he faced with four strikeouts.
Florida at the plate: Jac Caglianone is the face of Florida’s program and one of the faces of the sport with a .410 average, 31 home runs and 63 RBIs and a 5-2 record on the mound. Ty Evans has a .316 average, 13 home runs and 43 RBIs, and Colby Shelton has 20 home runs and 52 RBIs.
Florida on the mound: Spot starter Jake Clemente, reliever Frank Menendez and closer Fisher Jameson were key to the series-clinching 4-2 win over No. 11 seed Oklahoma State as Florida came back to claim the regional from the loser's bracket.
Florida in the dugout: The Gators have reached the Super Regionals for the 10th time in Kevin O’Sullivan’s 16 seasons as their coach. O’Sullivan served as a Clemson assistant from 1999 to 2007. The series marks the second straight weekend a former Clemson assistant coach returns to campus. Last week, it was Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin, who did not face the Tigers.
